About the Abilene Zoo:
The Abilene Zoo is located inside Nelson Park, off of Highway 36 and across from the Taylor County Expo Center.

Abilene Zoo exhibits include both plants and animals, and all animals are surrounded by plants from their native habitat. The mission of the Abilene Zoo is to compare animals that utilize grasslands from North and South America, Asia, Africa, and Australia. There are more than 800 animals, representing more than 200 species, at the zoo.

Among the most popular animals at the Abilene Zoo are its two species of primates, its African elephants, plus its giraffes, zebras, jaguars, bison, black bear, and its several aquariums. There is also a wetlands exhibit, plus a butterfly garden.

The zoo's Discovery Center explores the similarities between West Texas and Africa, and the zoo also hosts many popular community events throughout the year.

The Abilene Zoo charges a small admission fee, but it is one of the least expensive zoos in Texas. The zoo is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, and open until 9 p.m. on Thursdays during the summer months. Note that the zoo's entry gates close at 4:30 p.m., and major exhibit animals are put up at 4:30 p.m.; also that the zoo is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years days.
