Brownsville

Brownsville, Texas
Brownsville is the southernmost city in Texas, one of its largest ports and a tourist haven in the winter months with "Winter Texans" - primarily older couples escaping colder northern climes - head south.

Brownsville can serve as the jumping off point for explorations of Texas' Rio Grande Valley area and northern Mexico, and is also convenient to the resort destination of South Padre Island. But there is plenty to see and do right in Brownsville itself.

The area is one of the best spots for birdwatching in the U.S. Charro Days is the signature event in Brownsville, a four-day festival held every February, with carnivals, parades, music and much more for the whole family.

There are several fine museums in Brownsville, and even two battlefield sites. One, Palmito Ranch Battlefield, is the site of the last land action of the Civil War. The other, Palo Alto Battlefield, was the site of a Mexican War engagement.

The Gladys Porter Zoo is the can't-miss attraction in Brownsville, being one of the top zoos in the country in a mid-sized city. Brownsville is close enough to the Gulf of Mexico to provide fishermen plenty of opportunities to land that big fish.
