About Fort Concho National Historic Landmark:
Fort Concho was built along the banks of the Concho River in 1867, established to protect frontier settlements from Indian attacks, and for its residents to work at mapping West Texas. It was the home to cavalry and Army units, as well as African-American units which came to be known as the Buffalo Soldiers.
Fort Concho was deactivated in 1899 and its Army troops marched away. Today it is considered one of the best-preserved forts from the Indian Wars.
Fort Concho National Historic Landmark covers 22 acres today, with 23 original and restored structures. Many historical events are scheduled throughout the year.
Also on the premises are the Robert Wood Johnson Museum of Frontier Medicine and the E.H. Danner Museum of Telephony. Admission to these two museums is included in the Fort Concho National Historic Landmark admission fee.
