This small town has earned a reputation as one of the favorite weekend getaways in North Texas, with its brick-lined streets, historic homes and Downtown shopping district.
Jefferson has a great history and its citizens have done a good job of making that history available to visitors. That history involves an important role in the Confederacy, and the unusual fact that this inland city was once one of the largest shipping terminals in the South.
Jefferson also serves as the jumping off point for visitors to Caddo Lake, a swampy, moss-draped environment that is a must-see for visitors.

Getting to Jefferson
Jefferson is in the far northeast part of Texas, only about 30 minutes from the Louisiana border and from the Arkansas border. U.S. Highway 59 passes through Jefferson going north-south, and Interstate 20 heads east-west only about 20 miles to the south.
The East Texas Regional Airport outside of Longview, southeast of Jefferson, is the nearest airport with commercial passenger service.
