Nacogdoches

Nacogdoches, Texas
Nacogdoches is called "the oldest town in Texas" as it was a site of a Caddo Indian village long before Spain established a mission at the site in 1716. The city is also called "the cradle of Texas liberty," as several rebellions aimed at establishing a Republic of Texas started here in the early 1800s, prior to the Texas Revolution.

Nacogdoches is near the western edge of the El Camino Real, sometimes called the Old San Antonio Road, that was established as a trading route in 1691. Today's Texas 21 follows the same route.

Sitting in East Texas, Nacogdoches is surrounded by tall pine trees and lakes, including Nacogdoches Lake and Sam Rayburn Lake. It's a beautiful part of the state.

It's also home to Stephen F. Austin State University, whose athletic teams provide plenty of action for sports fans. The University is the site of the state's largest azalea garden, the Ruby M. Mize Azalea Garden. The SFA Interpretive Trail and SFA-Mast Arboretum are other popular attractions on the university campus.

The Lantana Creek Trail is a 6-mile trail through the piney woods of Pecan Acres Park. The Old North Church is thought to be the oldest "union" church in the state, while the Old Stone Fort is a replice of the stone house built in 1779 to serve as the Spanish entry point to Texas.

The terminal for the Texas State Railroad is 45 minutes away in Rusk. The railroad offers 50-mile round trip steam engine excursions through East Texas pine forests.
