Port Aransas and Mustang Island

Port Aransas has long had a reputation as a quaint getaway, a small fishing village with quiet beaches and great fresh seafood. "Quaint" might not describe the city anymore, although it certainly remains small. It's still the best area jumping-off point for deep-sea fishing, and offers plenty of beachfront.

The Port Aransas jetties are great for fishing and are literally right next to town. The same area offers access to a nice beach. Port Aransas is on Mustang Island, a barrier island north of North Padre Island. It is accessible by road from Corpus Christi or by ferry from Aransas Pass. If you're driving from Corpus Christi, keep an eye out for signs pointing to beach access roads.

And there are great seafood restaurants along the waterfront docks.

Mustang Island State Park
The park is just under 4,000 acres in size and features five miles of beach. The dunes on Mustang Island might reach 35 feet in height, but are periodically flattened by hurricanes.

The park is a great place for camping, hiking and fishing. Birdwatchers love it, and surfers can find a few small waves. And, of course, there are the five miles of beaches.
