About the Sam Houston Memorial Museum:
Sam Houston is known as the "Father of Texas." But he was famous even before he came to Texas - Houston had already served as governor of Tennessee. After coming to Texas and settling in Huntsville, Houston, as general of the Texas Army, won the decisive battle of the Texas Revolution at the Battle of San Jacinto. He then became the first President of the Republic of Texas. One Texas joined the Union, Houston served as senator and as governor.

The Sam Houston Memorial Museum, on the campus of Sam Houston State University, is at the site of Houston's homestead and features several of the buildings from that homestead, including Houston's Woodland Home and his law office.

Also on the grounds are the Walker Education Center, the Steamboat House in which Houston died, and the main museum itself. Special events - living history demonstrations - take place on weekends, including blacksmithing, weaving, and Cherokee Indian crafts. The General Sam Houston Folk Festival is held every April or May.

The Sam Houston Memorial Museum is open Tuesday-Saturday, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m., and on Sundays noon-4:30 p.m. The museum is closed on Mondays.
