Texas Festivals - October

Austin - Legends of Rasta Reggae Festival
This is a nationwide tour of reggae bands, but the annual stop in Austin draws tens of thousands of fans. More than a dozen bands plus DJs will perform.

Bandera - Hunters Bar-B-Q and Outdoor Expo
Barbecue, barbecue and more barbecue, along with all the trimmings, in the "Cowboy Capital of the World." Also children's games, live music, auction and prizes.

Boerne - Oktoberfest
Oktoberfest in Boerne is a 1-day event celebrating the city's German heritage. Expect lots of great food and fun.

Flatonia - Czhilispiel

Fort Worth - Red Steagall Cowboy Gathering and Western Swing Festival
Held late-month at the Historic Stockyards, it's one of the top cowboy events in the country. Cowboy poetry and music, trail rides, chuck wagons, rodeos.

Galveston - ARToberFEST
A 2-day event in the city's Art & Entertainment District, ARToberFEST features around 100 artists, many of them creating works while you watch.

Gilmer - East Texas Yamboree

Gonzales - "Come and Take It" Days

Helotes - Texas Shrimp Fest
A shrimp festival held inland (Helotes is a suburb of San Antonio) early in the month. All kinds of shrimp, cooked all kinds of ways, plus carnival, crafts fair, music and more.

New Braunfels - Wurstfest
Wurstfest usually begins on the last day of October, but at 10 days long is primarily a November event. The "Salute to Sausage" takes place in the city's beautiful Landa Park. Bring an appetite and your lederhosen. Around 60 musical acts perform.

Palestine - Hot Pepper Fest
Held every October in Downtown Palestine, this "hottest little festival in Texas" features live music and arts and craft, and a Kidz Zone. Don't miss the Macho Pepper Eating Contest - just be sure not to enter unless you know what you're getting yourself into.

Plantersville - Texas Renaissance Festival

San Antonio - Greek Funstival
A Greek festival held at St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church over the third weekend in October. Lots of Greek food plus dance and music. Church Website (for directions): http://www.stsophia-satx.org/home.html or call (210) 735-5051.

San Antonio - River Art Show
Sponsored by the River Art Group, this event is held the first full weekend in october in La Villita alongside the San Antonio River Walk. One hundred to 200 artists are usually on hand, working in many different mediums. Along with the exhibits, pieces will be for sale.

San Antonio - San Antonio International Auto and Truck Show
Held early in October (sometimes beginning the last day or days of Sept.), this event features vehicles from dozens of dealers and manufacturers. There's also an entertainment area for kids and other in the family not interested in the cars.

South Padre Island - BikeFest
That's "bike" as in bikers, not bicyclists. BikeFest is an open rally that draws bikers from all around the U.S., and that raises around $200,000 for charity. Held in early to mid-October with rides and a bike show.

South Padre Island - Sand Castle Days
You haven't seen sand castles until you've seen the ones built during this event. It's held mid-month and Texas State Champion is crowned (there are other categories for the lest-experienced). Music, crafts, kite-flying and other activities.

Temple - Texas Early Day Tractor & Engine Association Fall Show
See displays of antique farm machinery and demonstrations of early day life while enjoying homemade ice cream, beans, cornbread, and barbecue. Tractor parade and antique tractor pull daily. Visit organization's Web site for more info.

Tyler - Texas Rose Festival
Always held in mid-October, the Texas Rose Festival is a four-day celebration of Tyler's famous roses (Tyler has the nation's largest municipal rose garden). Hundreds of thousands of roses are shown off in the event in displays and naturally; there are arts and crafts, beauty pageants; a symphony performance in the park and much, much more.
