Texas has given many great things to the game of golf: Byron Nelson and Ben Hogan, Ben Crenshaw and Lee Trevino, Babe Didrikson Zaharias and Kathy Whitworth. Colonial Country Club and Champions Golf Club. The "Texas wedge."

But Texas' reputation as a golf destination is very underrated. Perhaps the term "Texas wedge" can help explain why. The term was popularized by Hogan who, growing up in Texas, often putted from off the green. Many Texas courses of Hogan's time were not in good enough condition to have much grass around their greens, and the ground might have been too hard to use a real wedge.
