About the Texas Prison Museum:
The Texas Prison Museum tells the history of the Texas Prison System, which has several units in Huntsville, including the one that holds Texas' Death Row.

Perhaps that's why "Old Sparky," the electric chair used by the State of Texas to execute Death Row inmates from the 1920s into the 1960s, is a popular exhibit at the museum.

Exhibits at the Texas Prison Museum are told both from the point of view of the inmates as well as people who worked within prisons. Popular exhibits include the Capital Punishment Exhibit (where you'll see Old Sparky), collections of prison contraband, inmate art, and collections of prison hardware (handcuffs, etc.). There's also a 9x6 cell for visitors to spend some time in.

From May-Sept. 30, the Texas Prison Museum is open Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m., and Sunday noon-5 p.m. From Oct. 1-April 30, the museum is open Monday-Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday noon-5 p.m. The museum is closed on major holidays, and there is an admission fee.
