About the Babe Didrikson Zaharias Museum and Visitor Center:
Mildred "Babe" Didrikson Zaharias was born in Beaumont in 1911, and died in 1956. She is considered by many to be the greatest female athlete of all-time.
The Babe earned her nickname when she traveled and starred with an otherwise all-male barnstorming baseball team (she was compared to Babe Ruth). She competed in track and field in running events and in the javelin, setting records and winning Olympic gold medals. She took up golf and within a couple years had become one of the best female golfers ever. In fact, Didrikson Zaharias was almost singlehandedly responsible for the early growth of the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Tour.
In 1945, she made the cut in a PGA Tour event, the first woman to make the cut on the premier men's golf circuit.
These are just the highlights of her athletic achievements. The Babe's life and achievements are celebrated in the Babe Didrikson Zaharias Museum and Visitor Center. The facility is open daily, except Christmas, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free.
